Illegal parking in Maputo city may soon get a fine of 240,000 meticais ( around US$3,494 at current exchange rates), reports AIM Moçambique. The measure, according to the ‘Domingo’ newspaper, “is being analyzed by the Municipal Assembly” as part of a set of changes in the Traffic Posture that the Municipal Council intends to implement, due to the growing wave of illegal parking in the country’s capital.
The Municipal Council of Maputo City believes that the illegal occupation of spaces for car parking must be severely punished.
The reserve of space at the level of the Traffic Post will have a new section with a total of 11 articles, which will regulate various situations related to daily life in the city, with penalties considered severe for offenders.
The other expected penalty is a fine for occupying reserved spaces reserved with a higher number of vehicles than the corresponding legally authorized area.
In the new posture a fine equivalent to 20,000 meticais (about 284 dollars) will be applied for each extra vehicle parked in any legally reserved space.
The applicants for the reservation of spaces for the parking of vehicles have reportedly resorted several tricks to get to park extra vehicles in such spaces.
