The academic year has already started, but thousands of students are yet to enrol.
According to data released on Thursday by the Education Directorate of the City of Maputo, 19% of the students eligible for the current academic year have not yet registered.
The information was advanced during a press conference taking stock of the first two days of classes in the city of Maputo.
According to Maputo City Director of Education Artur Dombo, all 259 primary and secondary schools in the city started classes on Monday.
However, Dombo added, 19% of students have not registered yet – for fear of the Covid-19 pandemic, he presumed.
“We had planned to enrol 68,644 students, but by Monday only 55,942 students (81.4%) had enrolled,” he said.
“In Grade 1, 78.9% of the students were enrolled; in Grade 6, 98%; in Grade 8, we have 79.5% of the students; and in Grade 11, 66.3% of the expected number of pupils,” Dombo elaborated.
Military registration
In conclusion, concerning the military register, the Maputo education director said that, of the estimated 29,900 young people eligible, only 22,800 had registered.
