The government is seemingly postponing the declaration of the evident community transmission of coronavirus in the city of Maputo, where there is a cumulative total of 265 positive Covid-19 cases and dozens of active transmission chains, the majority in the Municipal District of Kampfumo.
The Mozambican capital, where the first case of Covid-19 in the country was detected, reached the stage of community transmission more than a month ago. However, this determination depends on the number of individuals diagnosed per day. The Ministry of Health seems to have reduced its testing, and therefore is finding fewer and fewer people infected.
At a time when the provinces have become capable of diagnosing Covid-19 for themselves, the number of suspected cases tested in the city of Maputo has ranged from 42 on July 15, nine on July 18, 261 on July 19 and 67 this Wednesday (July 22), whereas the installed capacity is for more than 400 tests to be performed every day.
“Mass testing has no benefits,” Dr Eduardo Samo Gudo Júnior, Deputy Director-General of the National Institute of Health, told @Verdade a few days ago.
Meanwhile, @Verdade has learned that most of the positive cases diagnosed in the Mozambican capital so far have been detected in the Municipal District of Kampfumo, which had, by July 19, registered 114 confirmed cases.
The Kampfumo district comprises the Alto Maé A and B, Baixa, Bairro Central, Coop, Malhangalene A and B, Polana Cimento A and B and Sommerschield 1 neighbourhoods.
The remaining positive cases detected in Maputo City at the time were distributed between the municipal districts of Kamavota, with 47 positive cases; Kamubukwane, 36; Kachamanculo, 25; Kamaxakeni, 26; and Katembe, two positive cases.
