Mozambique: UN warns of 'critically low' funding for aid after latest cyclone

Two private health facilities have been closed by health authorities in the city of Maputo for not meeting minimum conditions for their operation.
City health director Alice Abreu explained that the irregularities were so serious that the clinics could not be allowed to continue functioning.
“We directed them to close, improve infrastructure and ensure that their staff have up-to-date professional registration. Once this is done, they can request an inspection in order to reopen.”
Abreu, who declined to name the establishments, said that the anomalies were detected during routine supervision and inspection work.
The conditions discovered and other aspects concerning the operation of private health facilities in Maputo have led health authorities to call together the heads of 205 private health facilities currently registered in the province.
Participants looked at the results of supervisory and technical support visits carried out by the Health Directorate. The one-day meeting also covered the management of medical waste.
“Improper management of medical waste constitutes a health risk. So when we visit health units we ask for proof that all the waste is destroyed correctly. Failure to provide this proof incurs penalties,” Abreu said.
Routine meetings between health authorities and managers of private health facilities are held twice a year.
