Maputo City Council says it loses three million meticais (around US$46,953) annually due to the theft of rainwater drainage system covers and metal grates.
According to Júlio Quive, head of Maintenance of Ditch and Drainage at the Maputo City Council, in addition to the financial losses, the theft of covers exacerbates flooding during the rainy season.
Speaking during an inspection visit on Tuesday, Quive announced that the city council was moving where possible from cast iron to concrete manhole covers as a way of mitigating the problem.
