The construction of a condominium on Avenida Friedrich Engels avenue in Maputo has been put on hold, because the building being erected is allegedly differed from the one granted a licence, which would have led the the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PGR) to embargo the works. Jornal Domingo online reports.
To make matters worse, the work has come to be seen as an attack on the environment. On the 6th of February of this year, intense rain in the country’s capital caused a landslide of red sand on the so-called Ponta Vermelha barrier.
The condominium, to be called ‘Vista-Mar’, would offer residents a spectacular view of Maputo bay.
Enquiries to date indicate that the matter is under in-depth investigation, and administrative measures are expected to be taken.
Project substitution?
After analysing the documents submitted to it, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) concluded that the construction works differed in architectural terms from those licensed by the Municipal Council.
According to Public Prosecutor Márcio da Graça, from the [PGR’s] Department of Collective and Diffuse Interests, the Environmental Impact Assessment licence should have been filed for approval of the construction licence, as stipulated in Decree No. 54/2015 of 31 December.
Toprak Limitada, a company registered in Mozambique , reportedly only sent the PGR plans for a building with two floors with common areas and complementary services.
