The Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) collected around 87.1 billion meticais (€1.3 billion) in revenue in Maputo city in the first half of this year, 2.5% more than in the same period in 2021, Notícias reported on Friday.
Although there was growth compared to last year, the amount collected was lower than the target of 89.4 billion meticais (€1.3 billion), explained Sidónio Jacob, AT delegate in the city of Maputo, quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency.
The Mozambican tax authorities point to the strengthening of taxpayer monitoring as one of the factors that ensured the increase in the amount collected.
“We can highlight as positive contributing factors an increase in the collection of Corporate Income Tax, resulting from withholding at source, intensified control of defaulting taxpayers, credits and corrections of systematic losses, as well as stricter control of tax-exempt imported goods,” Jacob explained.
The AT expects to collect 192.7 billion meticais (almost €3 billion) in revenue in the city of Maputo alone by the end of the year.
