The Municipal Council of Maputo City have authorised semi-collective passenger transport companies to raise fares from next Monday (27-02).
The increase is three meticais, against the seven requested by carriers
The measure follows an attempt at an unauthorised price hike this Monday.
The attempted increase led to a shortage of transport this morning. Passengers challenged the price hike, some even placing barricades on Maputo ring road, Miramar discovered.
As a result of the increase, passengers currently paying 12 meticais will next week pay 15 meticais, and 15 meticais journeys will rise to 18 meticais.
Carriers cite high operating costs, especially of fuel, and delays in paying subsidies promised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
