More than 530 commercial units in one of the largest municipal markets in the country have been without water supply for more than a week, Carta de Moçambique reports.
Although the taps have been dry for more than a week, market management prefers to remain silent on the matter, traders say.
Sellers are finding it difficult to use the toilets or wash their vegetables, complicating business in Maputo Central Market.
“We are at work, but devastated and facing many difficulties. We haven’t had water for days. We are struggling to use toilet, and don’t even have water to drink and the worst of all is that we pay fees every day,” report the sellers.
Lack of water at Central Market is an old problem.
“In May, we had the same problem. We went on for about two weeks without water and all we heard was that the water was cut off due to non-payment of bills. Days later they went to pay and we had water again, but this seems to be becoming a habit. We are sick of it: the toilets needs water, most of the things we sell here need water. We are in a shameful situation here,” a source related.
The sellers are asking those responsible to solve the problem as soon as possible, because, according to them, “life without water is impossible”, and the situation is increasingly worrying, especially considering the size of the market.
‘Carta’ tried without success to interview Maputo Central Market management and get their version of recent events.
This is the second time this year that the Maputo Central Market has run out of water. The first cut, in May, lasted around two weeks, reportedly forcing sellers to resort to sewage water to conduct their business.
