Transmarítima workers are on strike today in protest at delays in the payment of salaries, the lack of any wage increase or thirteenth month salary and the non-payment of social security subscriptions.
“Without a solution we will not operate [services],” one of Transmarítima’s striking workers said. The management of the company is currently in talks with the workers.
The shutdown at Transmarítima, which operates the Maputo-Katembe crossing, comes at a time when service on the route is already at a low ebb owing to the failure of one of the company’s two vessels allocated to this crossing. Currently, Bagamoyo is the only big ferry at this crossing
Meanwhile, Folha de Maputo recalls that the strike also affects the crossing to and from Inhaca Island, where there is also only one ferry. The Nhelety is the ferry allocated for the Maputo-Inhaca crossing but is currently being replaced by the Paulo Santos).
