The connecting pier bridge in Maputo reopens today after almost two weeks of rehabilitation works, a Notícias report says, putting an end to the daily martyrdom of passengers on the Maputo-Catembe ferry crossing.
During the rehabilitation works, the Transmaritima boats and smaller vessels known as “Mapapai” connecting the two banks of the bay operated with restrictions imposed by the influence of the tides in the fisheries port.
In the last week, conditions for boat docking were more favourable before 7.30 and between 13.00 and 14.00. The frequency of crossing was also reduced, causing waits of more than two hours in some cases.
The Transmaritma representative in Maputo, Felisberto Sitoe, says that some routine work on the connecting pier bridge will continue even after the reopening, but this will not affect the circulation of people and vehicles.
The docking infrastructure has long been a danger to users, due to its state of dilapidation, leading the Ministry of Transport and Communications to restrict cargo vehicles on the crossing to a gross weight of four tonnes in August.
