Maputo-Catembe Bridge, Mozambique, delivered at the end of June

The bridge linking Maputo to Catembe in Mozambique will only be delivered to the government at the end of June, said the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers quoted by O País newspaper.

Armindo Ngunga said the delays were a result of the need to relocate traders from the Mwankakana market in Malanga, located in the area of one of the bridge’s exit ramps.

Work on the bridge built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation began in September 2012 and cost US$725 million.

The contract also included the road linking the municipality of Catembe to Ponta D’Ouro, in the district of Matutuíne, in the province of Maputo.

The bridge, over Maputo Bay, is about 3 kilometres long, with four lanes for the circulation of vehicles, two in each direction.

The bridge, with a suspended section, is the largest in Mozambique and in Africa and is among the 60 largest in the world.

The bridge is expected to boost activity in the Catembe area and the south of Mozambique, as well as facilitating connections with South Africa.
