After its temporary closure under Covid-19 emergency regulations, the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo is reopening on Wednesday with Mozambican photographer Mário Macilau’s renowned “Água” exhibition.
The in-house opening will be streamed live on social media.
Mário Macilau, who is internationally renowned and the winner of several awards, discovered his passion for photography at the age of 15, and has exhibited in Malaysia, China, Bangladesh, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden .
The exhibition presents a series of photographs dedicated to climate change and the theme of water as a fundamental asset of life for humanity, doubly pertinent in the current situation where water is essential to community sanitation and hygiene.
The photos in the exhibition were taken in Mozambique over the last three years, primarily in Cuamba district, Niassa province, and document a local community project supported by WaterAid Mozambique, a non-governmental organisation based in the United Kingdom.
The Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre has invited renowned historian and writer João Paulo Borges Coelho, who has published a book with the same title, to present a poetic reflection on Macilau’s work as part of the exhibition.
The exhibition is sponsored by WaterAid Mozambique and supported by Art Dispersion (Portugal) and will be open Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., from August 13 to October 2. All appropriate hygiene and safety measures will be in force.
