Once again, a passenger bus lost its brakes in Maputo city, causing minor injuries to three people who were evacuated to the Maputo Central Hospital.
Arriving at Avenida Guerra Popular, near the Mandela Market, the Zimpeto-Baixa buslost its brakes and, picking up speed because of the incline, crashed into a motorbike and six other vehicles, some on the move and some parked.
“The machimbombo lost its brakes,” the driver said. “I stopped at the Mandela Market to check the brakes and the vehicles started to roll forwards. The brakes were working, but suddenly this happened.”
One ‘chapa’ driver, his vehicle stationary at the time, was among those surprised by the crash. “I was sitting and suddenly I heard a bang and my vehicle was carrying passengers, therefore I sent everyone out so there were no injuries,” he related.
Preliminary data from the Traffic Police suggests a lack of maintenance on the vehicle resulted in the loss of brakes. Traffic Police agent José Nhantumbo called on cooperative managers to carry out periodic maintenance to avoid accidents.
The three lightly injured men were assisted at Maputo Central Hospital, and were discharged this Thursday.
This is the second multi-vehicle road accident that ‘O País’ have reported in less than three days in Maputo. Last Tuesday, the capital saw an accident involving eight vehicles that caused 13 injuries.
