This year’s Maputo Book Fair edition will take place – in virtual format – from 22 to 24 October. Organized for the sixth consecutive year by Maputo Municipal Council, the event celebrates Mozambican and international literature, the arts, and the city of Maputo in partnership with the Union of Portuguese-speaking Capital Cities (UCCLA).
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is to take place digitally, “with the desire to continue promoting more and better access and enjoyment to books and reading in the country”, a statement from the UCCLA reads.
This 2020 edition honours Paulina Chiziane, who is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of her first novel, “Balada De Amor Ao Vento”, the first published by a Mozambican woman author.
The Maputo Book Fair has, as guest authors, Brazilians Ana Elisa Ribeiro and Regina Dalcastagnè, Cape Verdeans Danny Spínola and Eurídice Monteiro, the Spanish Esteve Bosch de Jaureguízar and Ana Manso, Guinean Tony Tcheka and Mozambicans Armando Artur, Teresa Manjate, Eduardo Quive, Nelson Lineu, Jessemuce Cacinda, Ana Mafalda Leite and Sara Jona and the Portuguese João Nuno Azambuja and Marília Miranda Lopes, among others.
Despite the Covid-19 constraints, this year’s edition continues to invest strongly in the presence of writers and other men and women of letters, both national and international, as a way of broadening horizons and maximising internationalization. “Putting Maputo on the world agenda as a literary city” remains one of the organisation’s main goals. “In this sense, there is a very strong expectation that this virtual fair, by eliminating distance, will advance the search for contacts on social networks and intercultural dialogue beyond invisible borders,” writes the UCCLA.
According to the Maputo Municipal Council “the first online edition comes with many doubts and fears, but also a great desire to expand the creative space”. The fair will be officially opened by the president of the municipal council, Eneas Comiche.
