As a result of the strong winds felt in the city and province of Maputo on Monday afternoon, a section of the Costa do Sol beach protection barrier was partially destroyed, affecting the sidewalks of parking spaces, O País reports.
Today, Wednesday, the construction contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), visited the site and made an assessment of the damage caused. Without recording an interview, one of the engineers explained at the site that quality material was used for the construction of the protection wall and of the road itself.
According to the same source, the combination of factors among them climate change may be behind the destruction. A scenario which, according to the source, may worsen in the near future due to the removal of the mangroves to make space for construction.
This was not the only infrastructure affected by bad weather. People leaving the centre of Maputo towards the beach of Costa do Sol will be able to see a wall destroyed by the force of the waters.
In a telephone conversation, Mozambican environmentalist Carlos Serra considered that the Maputo Ring Road is in danger, and advised urgent intervention, namely the rebuilding of the dunes and planting of vegetation.
Delivered about four years ago, the Avenida Marginal work is under the management of the National Road Administration (ANE) and was carried out by the China Road and Bridge Corporation – CRBC.
