The cities of Maputo and Matola and the town of Boane in southern Mozambique will continue to face restrictions on water supplies due to the low level of storage at the Pequenos Libombos dam, the Mozambican government announced yesterday.
The public water supply will continue to run for only eight hours a day – an improvement, however, on February to April, when it was available for a only few hours every other day.
The spokesperson for Mozambique’s Council of Ministers, Ana Comoana, said yesterday at a press conference that Pequenos Libombos was only 29 percent full as a result of low rainfall in the 2017/2018 rainy season, which followed a prolonged drought in the previous year.
She also noted out that the Cahora Bassa reservoir has low levels of water, affecting the supply of electricity in some areas of the country.
“With good rainfall upstream, the situation in the reservoirs in the north and centre is good, with the exception of Cahora Bassa, which remains low, affecting energy supply,” she said.
