The opening gala of the second series of the 2018 Xiquisti classic music season took place in Maputo Municipal Council hall yesterday.
The atmosphere was classical, just like the music and the audience present in a room decorated with simplicity and refinement.
A semi-extinguished light, a room full of expectation and a desire to listen to the good music produced by Xiquitsi; such is the best way to describe the gala opening of five concerts commemorating the five years of Xiquitsi.
The voice of Florêncio Manhique and the violoncello of Professor Juan Rivas opened the show with the first taste of what was to come.
Following their performance, the voice fell silent and Japanese violinist Maya Egashira played “Matsungulo”, “Liyendzu” and “Hi wu Mozambicana”, produced by Estevão Chissano, to strong applause.
After Egashira on the violin, the piano of Luís Magalhães and the cello of Peter Martens took centre stage.
And because Kika Materula also knows her art, she joined Peter, Pedro and David Juritz, who together filled the room with melodies by turns sweet, aggressive and soft, making the atmosphere even more interesting.
Kika Materula (oboe) and Peter Martens (cello), together with David Juritz and Pedro Muñoz on the violin, melded the voice of their instruments into one, and reaching the hearts of all who listened, eyes closed in rapture or wide open in amazement.
And because Xiquitsi is also made up of students, and it was their much-awaited performance of Jigha, Ostinato, Intermezzo and Finale (Le Dargason) which gave the gala its grand finale.
And so the opening show ended, but the second series goes on until the 12th of this month.
