Maputo airport, Mozambique, among China’s largest aid projects in Africa

The modernization of Maputo International Airport in Mozambique was one of the largest development aid projects built by China in Africa, according to a list compiled by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.
Completed in 2012, the work carried out by Chinese company Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC), represented an investment of US$75 million, “funded in full by the Chinese government,” the newspaper wrote.
The loan to Mozambique for this project consisted of US$50 million in subsidized loans and the remaining US$25 million in commercial credit, according to Chinese officials.
The modernization work, which came in fifth place in the People’s Daily list included construction of a new terminal and increasing the previous passenger processing capacity of 450,000 to 900,000 passengers per year.
Top of the list comes Tazara railway, also known as Uhuru or TanZam, linking the port of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, to the town of Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia and whose construction costs reached US$500 million.
