Maputo: A woman dies in Baixa – Noticias

“A 46-year-old citizen, thought to be a street vendor, died on Wednesday at around 4.45 p.m., probably while running away from the municipal police, on the corner between Guerra Popular and 24 de Julho Avenues in Maputo ” a Noticias report reads. The title of the article is “Cidadã morre de ‘susto’ na Baixa” [Citizen dies of “fright” in Baixa].

According to witnesses, Ema Paulino took fright and fell on the sidewalk when she noticed municipal police carrying out their usual operations against informal trading.

Mateus Cuna, a spokesman for the corporation, said he regretted the death, and that the citizen was not being pursued by the agents in the vicinity.

“She tripped over an open gutter and hit her head on the sidewalk, close to the siding of a construction site. There was no contact between the woman and the municipal police,” he clarified in response to questions about alleged police involvement in the fatal incident.

The source explained that the corporation guarded the location until the arrival of the National Criminal Investigation Service for forensic examination, and said investigation into the cause of death was ongoing.

He did however urge citizens wishing to carry out any commercial activity in Maputo to get in touch with the Council of the Development of the Local Economy – Markets and Fairs for allocation to an appropriate site.

Cidadã morre de “susto” na Baixa

Uma cidadã de 46 anos, que se suspeita tratar-se de vendedora ambulante, morreu ontem por volta das 16.45h, quando provavelmente fugia da Polícia Municipal, na esquina entre as avenidas Guerra Popular e 24 de Julho, na cidade de Maputo.

Segundo testemunhas, a mulher que em vida respondia pelo nome de Ema Paulino, assustou-se e caiu no passeio quando apercebeu-se da presença da Polícia Municipal, que se encontravam nas habituais operações de proibição da venda informal.

Mateus Cuna, porta-voz da corporação, lamentou a morte e esclareceu que a cidadã não foi perseguida pelos agentes que se encontravam nas imediações.

“Ela tropeçou numa sarjeta destapada e bateu com a cabeça no passeio, nas proximidades do tapume de uma obra. Não houve nenhum contacto entre a mulher e a Polícia Municipal”, esclareceu em resposta a uma questao sobre o presumivel envolvimento dos agentes no incidente fatal.

A fonte explicou que a corporaçao protegeu o local até a chegada do Serviço Nacional de Investigaçao Criminal para a perícia, por isso, as investigações continuam visando apurar as causas da morte.

Por outro lado, exortou aos munícipes que pretendem exercer qualquer actividade comercial a aproximarem da vereação do Desenvolvimento da Economia Local da direcção de Mercados e Feiras para o seu enquadramento em locais adequados.
