Mozambique | Ossufo Momade: Election fraud, failed state mark 50th independence - Watch
The governor of the central province of Manica, Alberto Mondlane, on Wednesday declared that the police should undertake “concrete actions” to stop once and for all the acts of banditry committed by gunmen of the rebel movement Renamo against defenceless citizens.
He was speaking in Manica Town at the opening of a meeting of the Provincial Coordinating Council of the Mozambican police.
Mondlane said that Renamo remains the main threat to peace and to economic development, accusing the illicit Renamo militia of attacking helpless civilians, and destroying social infrastructures, particularly in the central region of the country. Renamo, he accused, was trying at all costs to hold back the development of Mozambique.
The police, he urged, must make its presence felt throughout the territory, to defend the public and their property
“Up to now, Renamo is our main challenge”, Mondlane told the meeting. “We have to use all the means at our disposal to halt the wave of threats they have spread within our communities. What we want is for the people to live in peace. We want them to produce and to move freely within Mozambican territory”.
“It is inexplicable that this political force continues to be a threat to the public”, he added. “So I repeat – we must work to restore tranquillity to the population”.
“Mozambique wants to continue growing, and to generate more wealth for its people”, said Mondlane. “For this, the people must be able to work freely. What we have witnessed are constant threats to progress, and these acts cannot be tolerated. We have to have a police force ready to combat any situation that contributes to disturbing order and tranquillity”.
