A man has fallen to his death from the Dona Ana railway bridge over the Zambezi River in central Mozambique due to the poor condition of the bridge’s pedestrian walkway.
Local residents and users of the bridge claim that the holes in the walkway constitute a real problem.
Secretary of the Barue-2 district, Antonio Chibante, where the victim, Costa Diogo, lived, confirmed the parlous state of affairs. “Many people die when falling off the middle of this bridge.”
At the time of his death, Diogo, a local potter, was crossing from the municipal village of Nhamayabwe, in Mutarara district, Tete province, to the administrative post of Sena, in Sofala province.
The AIM report found that if urgent measures are not taken to stop the problem, there may be more deaths due to the deterioration of the pedestrian walkway.
The neighbourhood secretary said that the maintenance teams should hurry up and fix the holes. The bridge is one of the largest carrying people and goods, including coal from Moatize and many other products to and from inland countries such as Malawi and Zambia.
