A man whose identity has not yet been established was electrocuted on Monday morning (November 7) in Maputo when his umbrella became entangled with a public utility power line.
According to witnesses, the case happened around 08:00 AM in the Polana Canico B neighbourhood as the victim was on his way to work. His umbrella became entangled with the power line, and he was electrocuted when he reached up to disentangle it.
“The deceased met his death trying to disentangle his umbrella which was caught in a low-voltage power line. The wire was already cut and we had called Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) to isolate it,” one witness said.
In fact, according to witnesses, an area resident was at EDM premises reporting the severed power line and the danger it posed to passers-by and neighbourhood residents at the time of the incident.
“Some people tried to warn the man not to grab the wire, but it was too late. He was already sprawled, lifeless, on the ground,” said another resident, adding that the ground being wet from rain the night before may have precipitated the individual’s demise.
Hours after the incident, an EDM team headed to the site to repair the cable which was endangering the lives of area’s residents.
