The body of an unidentified individual thought to be over 30 years old was found on Thursday morning 20 October in Marracuene’s Agostinho Neto neighbourhood, Maputo province. The body bore signs of torture and multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses who found the body near the Michafuntene Cemetery told A Verdade that they do not know the victim, but thought he had been murdered at around 11:00 PM on Wednesday (October 19). There were several bullet casings at the incident scene.
Residents in the area said they heard more than 10 shots, and some claimed to have seen a car, but from too great a distance to identify its make or registration number.
“There is a lack of street lighting in this area which facilitates these frequent assaults,” one woman said.
Another witness told A Verdade that he was woken up by the shots. “I thought they were bandits storming a house and was afraid, because we get robbed all the time round here. But the shooting didn’t stop, so then I thought it was an exchange of fire between the police and the bandits.”
Another resident said he thought a vehicle leaving the scene at high speed and probably carrying the alleged assassins was blue in colour. “They turned the car lights on. I don’t know what was it that they wanted to see, but it meant I could see a little of what was going on, and the colour of the car.”
