Mozambican police have detained a man in the southern province of Inhambane for possessing 25 planks of chanfuta wood, a species whose felling is prohibited because of the risk of extinction.
Inhambane province police spokesman Juma Ali said the man was taking the wood from the Mabote district to Massinga to sell it.
“He is detained and is expected to answer in court for illegal logging,” Juma Ali told Lusa.
Several national and international reports have warned of the risk of extinction of several species of tree in the country as a result of uncontrolled exploitation.
