Mozambican police have arrested a man on suspicion of raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl in Macate district, central Manica province, a spokesperson for the corporation told Lusa today.
Mateus Mindu explained in the provincial capital, Chimoio, that the 44-year-old man was accused of ‘grooming’ the minor, his neighbour.
The suspect detained is also charged with murder in Zimbabwe, a country which Manica borders, and for another rape of a minor in Manica.
Without advancing figures, the PRM spokesman told Lusa that cases of sexual abuse had slowed down in the first 10 months of 2018 in the region, where a campaign developed by police in partnership with civil society organisations that promotes case reporting has been running.
Police statistics indicate that in 2017, 120 cases of sexual abuse were reported in Manica, some thanks to the campaign, which was motivated by the fact that many incidents went unreported because families wished to avoid reporting them to the authorities.
