Mozambique police last week arrested a man in possession of a kilogram of cocaine at Maputo International Airport.
Police spokesman Orlando Mudumane said the 23-year-old, now in police custody, had flown in from Angola.
Identified only as Mussa, the suspect said that he went to Brazil to sell some precious stones that he bought in Ilha de Moçambique.
“I went to Brazil to sell some stones that I got in Ilha de Moçambique, and the person I sold the stones to gave me a briefcase to give to someone here in Mozambique,” Mussa said.
He explained that he was detained shortly after his arrival at the airport when police discovered the drug during a routine check.
“I had never seen the drug. They gave it to me to give it to someone,” he said.
Mudumane said the police registered 60 crimes last week, compared with 74 in the same period last year.
Authorities dismantled five gangs engaged in armed assaults on commercial establishments, homes and members of the public in the neighbourhoods of Polana Caniço, Maxaquene and Ferroviário, he said.
With regard to road accidents, there were 11 road accidents against seven recorded during the same period last year. Mudumane said that road accidents, especially where pedestrians were run over, remained among the police’s biggest concerns.
