A 25-year-old individual is being held at Police Station Number Nine in Maputo’s Polana-Caniço B neighbourhood, on suspicion of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl.
The incident took place on the 9th of May in an abandoned house in the Maxaquene C neighbourhood, the arrest following thanks to the police investigation and the assistance of the population.
According to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the victim was first physically assaulted by a woman living in the same neighbourhood for having allegedly stolen her cell phone.
The woman then handed the 13-year-old over to the accused man, a friend of her brother’s. After raping the girl, the accused strangled her, because she had recognised him.
“SERVIC in the city of Maputo carried out investigations that culminated in the arrest of the citizen who assaulted the victim, and continued with the investigation until the rapist was neutralised,” SERNIC spokesperson Saudelino Massingue explained.
According to Massingue, both individuals have confessed and are facing charges of aggravated homicide.
“Currently, the physical assault aggressor is under arrest and procedural steps are underway for the legalisation of the rapist’s arrest,” Massingue concluded.
