A man accused of involvement in apartment robberies in the city of Maputo is being by police. Microwaves, shoes and CDs are just among the objects found in the possession of the 29-year-old, presented by police yesterday as a member of a gang specializing in apartment robberies in the capital.
The accused man admits his involvement and his ownerships the vehicle used in the crimes, but justifies the gang’s behaviour with drunkenness.
“We went to the apartment and nobody was home. We went in and took the things. It was in a flurry of drunkenness. My friends said ‘You already have transport, we will get some money'”, the man explained.
Police said they had been investigating the gang since the 11th of this month, when they used a firearm to rob a residence.
“Last Saturday, they went to carry out another robbery in Malhangalene [a Maputo neighbourhood], but thanks to information in the police’s possession, we were able to seize this man, one of a gang of five,” police spokesman Paulo Nazaré explained.
According to Nazaré, the gang specializes in apartment robberies, and investigations to secure the detention of the other four gang members are ongoing.
