Mozambique on Saturday delivered a stinging bite on Zambia in the dying minutes of their Group K opener in Ndola to win 1-0 and break their winless jinx against their neighbours. Stanley Ratifo’s late goal sealed Mozambique first-ever win over Zambia on the 20th attempt played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The match was Zambia’s to win but the post and glaring misses conspired to deny the 2012 African champions win at home.
Zambia striker Fwayo Tembo sent his 24th minute attempt wide and also saw his 38th minute free-kick parried by goalkeeper Victor.
Midfielder Kondwani Mtonga then hit the post in the 56th minute, and a minute later, Dave Daka fired his attempt on the rebound on the side netting as the homers near misses continued.
The visiting Mambas then stepped on the gas with captain Elias Pelembe leading the charge after the hour mark .
Defender Stopilla Sunzu kept Zambia in the game denying Telinho in the 82nd minute before he swept away Pelembe’s shot four minutes later.
However, Mozambique had one last ace up their sleeves and Ratifo met Telinho’s cross on the near to fire in the killer punch on the near post.
The win sealed three points for the Mambas who made a great start in their bid to end their seven-year wait for AFCON qualification.
