Delays and the eventual cancellation of a flight from Nampula to Maputo left passengers using the services of the national flag carrier, Linhas Areas of Mozambique (LAM) aghast on Monday.
The aircraft concerned, a Boeing 737-500, was due to leave to Maputo at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, but passengers at Nampula International Airport were informed of a 30-minute delay in the aircraft’s arrival. Before the time in question had elapsed, however, a second delay, this time of an hour, was announced,
LAM customers duly waited until about 11:00 p.m.,, when the Boeing finally landed in the city of Nampula. When all seemed to have stabilised and they had already boarded the aircraft, passengers claim they were informed by the crew of a malfunction. Then, with the malfunction apparently cured, passengers were reportedly told that they could not travel because Maputo International Airport, their destination, was already closed for works.
Passengers were accommodated overnight in a hotel, but some had onward connections to South Africa and Brazil. Other passengers complained to O Pais of the alleged delay in providing information on the malfunction repair and the cancellation of the flight.
The flight finally left Nampula on Tuesday at about 8:00 a.m. and arrived in Maputo close to 11:00 a.m..
