Mozambique: At least 16 shot in march with Mondlane in Maputo - NGO

President Lazarus Chakwera will leave Malawi on Wednesday, 14 August 2024 for a two-day state visit to Maputo, Republic of Mozambique.
According to a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lilongwe, Chakwera is expected to leave through Kamuzu International Airport at 10 a.m.
The statement further notes that the president’s visit is at the invitation of his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi, in recognition of the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries.
“During the visit, President Chakwera will hold bilateral discussions with President Nyusi on mutual interests, to further strengthen the cordial relations between the two countries. It is also anticipated that the two governments will sign agreements in several areas of cooperation,” reads an excerpt of the statement.
The statement further reads that the president’s visit is at the invitation of his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi, in recognition of the cordial and strong bilateral relationship that exists between the two countries.
“During the visit, His Excellency the President will hold bilateral discussions with His Excellency President Nyusi on mutual interest leading to further strengthening of cordial relations between the two countries. It is also expected that the two Governments will sign agreements in several areas of cooperation,” reads an excerpt of the statement.
Malawi High Commissioner to Mozambique Wezi Moyo underscored the importance of the President’s Official trip to the people of the two countries.
She said while in Mozambique, President Dr. Chakwera will hold several critical engagements aimed at fostering, trade such as an improvement in movement of people and goods which will improve economic activities.
“President Chakwera together with his counterpart, Filipe Nyusi, will hold bilateral talks and sign Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) on several areas of cooperation,” she said.
The High Commissioner said among important aspects of the MOU, will be strengthening the interconnection of the 41 megawatts of power that was commenced in 2022 between the two countries and also transportation of petroleum products will be formalised.
As one way of recognising President Chakwera’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries, Joaquim Chissano University will confer an Honorary Doctorate Degree in international Relations and Leadership.
The renewed ties will among other things enable trade, the establishment of the Mozambique Malawi electricity interconnection deal, refurbishment of the Nacala railway line, as well as free movement of people between the two countries.
Following his visit to Mozambique, President Chakwera will proceed to Harare, Zimbabwe for the 44th ordinary summit of the Southern Africa Development Cooperation (SADC) Heads of State and Governments, scheduled for 17th August 2024.
According to the statement, the SADC summit will allow the Malawian leader to engage other regional leaders to advance Malawi’s Agriculture, Tourism and Mining Strategy (ATM).
