Mozambique: At least five 'Naparamas' killed in Mutuali, Malema district - Watch
The Mozambican police on Wednesday arrested two Malawian citizens at the Biri-Biri frontier post, in Tsangano district, in the western province of Tete, for attempting to bribe police officers.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Tete provincial police command, Lurdes Ferreira, said the Malawians were returning to Malawi and attempted to smuggle out of the country undeclared goods, originating from South Africa, in their vehicle.
They attempted to persuade members of the Frontier Guard to turn a blind eye to the smuggled goods by offering them a bribe of 2,000 meticais and 950 South African rands (equivalent to a total of about 115 US dollars).
But the Frontier Guards rejected the bribe and instead, they arrested the two Malawians and seized their vehicle for further investigations.
“This was a good attitude by the frontier guards since it may discourage citizens from becoming involved in corrupt schemes”, said Ferreira. “Everybody should act like this so that the phenomenon of corruption does not occur in our province”.
Ferreira also told reporters that the police have investigated the death of an 11 year old girl who drowned in a private swimming pool in Tete city on Wednesday, and concluded that her death was caused by negligence on the part of her parents, who did not pay attention when the girl entered the pool.
She took the opportunity to appeal to parents and guardians to protect their children from danger, and this avoid the loss of human lives.
