The Mozambican police in the central province of Manica have arrested a Malawian citizen who attempted to bribe a traffic policeman to allow his truck, carrying 15 people, believed to be illegal immigrants, to pass through a checkpoint.
The truck was carrying the migrants from Malawi, through Mozambique to South Africa. When the traffic police stopped the truck in Vanduzi district on Sunday, the Malawian driver offered the policeman a bribe of 1,000 meticais (about 17 US dollars).
The bribe was rejected, and all those in the vehicle were detained. The driver, who has not been named, will face charges of attempting to corrupt a police officer.
The spokesperson for the Manica Provincial Police Command, Elsidia Filipe, told reporters that the detention comes in the wake of the campaign launched a few days earlier to combat corruption throughout the country.
“This work will continue, because we want to fight against corruption in all spheres of society”, said Filipe.
As for the migrants, she said the police are working with the Provincial Immigration Service to assess the authenticity of the documents the migrants showed them. “If their documents are in order, they will be allowed to continue their journey”, she added. “If we find they are in the country illegally, they will be deported to their country of origin. But the driver will remain detained to face charges of corruption”.
