Mozambique: Namibia President impressed by Maputo Thermal Power Plant - Watch
Malawi wants to import electricity from Mozambique to make up a shortfall in domestic power production the Malawi foreign minister, Emmanuel Fabiano, said in Maputo on Monday.
He said that Malawi was not yet connected to the Southern African grid but he would like to link up through Mozambique.
The first phase of the operation involves installing a mobile substation in Mozambique costing $300,000 which will be reimbursed by Malawi.
Mozambique’s foreign minister said the country had a surplus of 10 megawatts it could use to support its neighbour.
Apart from the energy sector, José Pacheco said the two sides were also analysing how to cooperate in the transport area, particularly through strategies to facilitate the Malawi’s use of Mozambique’s ports.
Mozambique already sells electricity to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Zambia.
