Mozambique: Prisons must not become schools of crime, warns Chapo - AIM report
The Malawi government is considering re-opening Luwani Refugee Camp located in the border district of Mwanza in southern Malawi to accommodate over 1,000 Mozambican refugees fleeing their country.
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Beston Chisamile said Tuesday in the capital Lilongwe that most of the refugees are confined in the small village of Kapise in Mwanza where it is difficult to reach them with humanitarian aid because they are mixed with the local people.
“We are working with international humanitarian agencies and other partners to make sure that these refugees are put in one place so that they can be easily reached with assistance,” he said.
He added that as a signatory to the UN Convention relating to the status of refugees, Malawi has to abide by the dictates of the Convention, hence the consideration of opening a camp at a distance of 40 kilometres from the border.
Mozambican refugees, mainly from Tete Province, are fleeing their country, claiming that the Mozambique government has accused them of harbouring opposition elements destabilizing the country.
