Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera has apologised to citizens for the persistent fuel crisis during his State Of the Nation Address, ahead of the general elections on September 16
As a former clergy man and leader of the Assemblies of God Church, his administration’s economic performance has faced scrutiny due to rising living costs and fuel shortages.
Chakwera attributed the crisis to alleged machinations by opposition party leaders, accusing them of colluding with business tycoons to undermine his administration.
“Despite my assurances that fuel would stabilize throughout September, internal sabotage by certain employees at the National Oil Company of Malawi, in cahoots with unscrupulous agents, has thwarted our plans. I assure you, decisive action will be taken against these individuals post-elections,” Chakwera stated.
Long queues were reported at fuel stations across the country, with most consumers buckling under the pressure of soaring transportation costs.
Economic Expert, Ryan Kabambe attributed the instability to a lack of effective policies.
