Celebrating a significant milestone, Nacala Logistics on Tuesday (July 23) welcomed the arrival of the inaugural fuel train from the port of Nacala in Mozambique to the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) depot in Lilongwe, marking the restoration of a crucial service after a hiatus of 21 years.
This historic moment not only restores a key logistical service but also ensures efficient fuel transportation into Malawi, the company reported.
Malawi this month started importing 15 million litres of fuel per month from the Port of Nacala to Lilongwe, via rail, operations entrusted to the company Nacala Logistics Limited,
The import follows the agreements reached between Nacala Logistics Limited and the National Petroleum Companies of Malawi (NOCMA) and Petroleum Importers Limited.
The external affairs specialist at Nacala Logistics Limited in Malawi, Joyce Malongo, told Radio Mozambique last week that the start of fuel imports from the Port of Nacala to Lilongwe follows the rehabilitation of the rail section between Balaka and Lilongwe.
With the inauguration of this shipment route, Malawi will gradually reduce its use of the port of Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania for importing fuel, the cost of which is assessed as expensive, due to the use of road transport.
To respond to the challenges imposed by the Malawian government, Nacala Logistics has a fleet of 88 fuel tankers with a total capacity of 3.5 million litres per trip.
The company had already been transporting fuel from Nacala to Blantyre, but had not yet reached Lilongwe, the Malawian capital, which depended entirely on trucks for fuel deliveries.
With the rehabilitation of the line, this historic milestone has been reached when, at the beginning of this month, the first shipment of mineral coal was made from the city of Moatize in Tete to Lilongwe, via rail.
This was the result of Nacala Corridor management agreements signed by the presidents of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi, of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera and of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, within the framework of the Southern African trade and connectivity project in the regional coordination component, with the objective of strengthening operations and promoting the development of the region.
According to President Nyusi, the agreements represent a new management paradigm, in a tripartite approach to the concerns of economic agents, ensuring integrated mechanisms for the movement of people and goods, with the aim of reducing transport costs and transit time for goods.
