Most of the cases filed in Mozambique against citizens of other countries since the beginning of the year are related to the loss of the foreign resident identification documents, authorities announced yesterday.
The National Immigration Service (Senami) of Mozambique revealed yesterday that 602 cases have been opened since the beginning of the year.
Those who lose their card or render them unusable are not necessarily “in a position of illegality”, and cases are investigated individually, but it is a situation that authorities want to avoid, Senami spokesman Cira Fernandes said.
“If it is proven that the loss of the card resulted from negligence, we double the reissuing fee” as a deterrent, he added.
The normal tariff varies between 14,000 and 22,000 meticais (200 to 314 euros).
The number of cases in which residents are found without a card has risen. Last week, double the number of cases were registered as in the same period of 2016, Fernandes said.
