A fire of major proportions reduced a part of the operational area of Topack Plastics in Maputo’s Chamanculo neighbourhood to ashes in the early hours of Monday morning.
A company source told Noticias that the cause of the fire, which brought down the roof and some of the walls, was still unknown. Smoke from the fire could be seen at a great distance, but there is no record of human casualties.
Manuel Vara, the director general of the company, said that the fire had reached the area where 5 and 20 litre drums, watering cans and plastic bags were produced.
He said that it had been possible to control the blaze using internal fire-fighting resources and with the help of the National Public Safety Service (SENSAP) team.
Residents had heard explosions inside the factory at around 3:00 a.m., and approached to try and ascertain the cause.
“We found that the flames had already spread to neighbouring houses and tried to salvage what property we could, but there was no time, and the surrounding families have suffered great losses,” Eunício Lucas said, adding that some 20 families were affected.
