Mozambique: Insurgents attack farming community in Cabo Delgado - Lusa
More than 600 people were treated in Maputo’s two largest hospitals, Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) and the Jose Macamo General Hospital, for injuries sustained during the transition from 2016 to 2017.
They included the victims of physical assault, traffic accidents, mishaps with fireworks and shootings.
Over 300 people were treated at HCM, which was six per cent more than on New Year’s Eve 2015, according to the director of emergency services at the hospital, Raul Cossa, cited by Radio Mozambique. There were 119 cases of trauma, caused by physical assault, compared with 98 the previous year.
Cossa said there were fewer traffic accidents than at the end of 2015, but gave no further details.
His counterpart at the Jose Macamo hospital, Ana Neves, reported 293 patients, compared with 250 in the 2015/16 New Year festivities. She said the hospital dealt with 20 victims of traffic accidents, but none of them had to be hospitalised overnight.
