A 4.5 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was reported in eight districts of provinces in central Mozambique at 06:06 a.m. on Sunday, but without causing casualties or damage, an official source said.
“The epicentre was in the Caia district [in Sofala province], at a depth of 10 km,” a note from the National Institute of Mines of Mozambique (INAMI) reads.
In addition to Caia, the earthquake also hit the districts of Chemba, Maringué, Cheringoma and Marromeu (in Sofala province), Mutarara (Tete province), Morrumbala and Mopeia (Zambézia).
“INAMI, the entity responsible for monitoring seismic activity in Mozambique, is following the evolution of the situation with the administrative authorities of the provinces of Sofala, Tete and Zambézia,” adds the note, which also reports that there is so far no record of casualties or damage.
