Six children have been admitted to the paediatric ward of Cabo Delgado Provincial Hospital in Pemba, after fleeing the invasion of Macomia by insurgents on Thursday.
MediaFax learned that six children were allegedly hit by shrapnel from a bomb dropped by a helicopter supporting the Defence and Security Forces against the armed band that attacked the town of Macomia, the district capital.
This was the story retold to MediaFax by a Pemba resident who had just been visiting because he learned that a relative of his was among the injured children.
The children were in the company of other people fleeing the attack. The helicopter personnel, the source said, nevertheless still managed to direct the evacuation of the children to Pemba.
Another 35 children from Macomia who sought refuge in Pemba were taken to the Laura school in the city’s Cariacó neighbourhood.
