The National Criminal Investigation Service has confirmed that “there are strong indications” of the involvement of one of its agents in the rape of a girl under 13 years of age, and says he will be held criminally accountable.
“Investigations ascertained that four individuals are strongly indicated as being involved in this crime, and that one these individuals is a SERNIC agent in Maputo province,” a spokesman said.
In an incident that has shocked society, a girl under the age of 13 was sexually abused by four individuals, after consuming a soft drink laced with sedatives.
None of the individuals involved in the crime are currently detained.
“The investigations are still underway,” the SERNIC spokesman explained. “All I can say at the moment is that there are strong indications that they were involved in this crime. What will happen in the next few days is something that only the investigations will decide.”
SERNIC says it condemns the behaviour of the agent involved, adding that disciplinary procedures are also underway against the suspect. The institution has promised to clarify the outcome of the case in the next few days.
