– Macau has decided to increase as of Monday the mandatory quarantine period from 14 days to 21 days for persons arriving from territories considered to be at high risk of transmission of the new coronavirus.
“Worldwide (…) after 14 days there have been new transmissions and we will therefore strengthen the quarantine measures,” said Doctor Lo Iek Long of the Health Services at a press conference.
The measure excludes people arriving in Macau from places identified as being at moderate risk in mainland China and Taiwan and includes those coming from the UK and the neighbouring Chinese special administrative region, Hong Kong, he said.
“The new variant identified in the UK has an additional 70% transmissibility,” stressed Lo Iek Long, adding that the authorities aim to ensure the public health of Macau residents and minimise the risks of transmission.
Macau has not recorded any cases for almost six months, having been one of the first territories to be hit by the pandemic at the end of January. In total it has identified only 46 contagions and no local outbreaks.
