The Macau Government will on Thursday announce information on the next round of conditional sale of masks to the population, as part of the measures to prevent the new coronavirus.
“We are still in the fifth round and from 12th March we will announce information on the next round”, said the coordinator of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, at the daily press conference of the New Coronavirus Contingency Coordination Centre.
Each Macau resident can buy masks at cost price at approved pharmacies upon presentation of identification, and ten masks can be purchased every ten days.
” Macau has been without new infections for 34 days and given the global situation, we think it is not the right time to stop wearing masks,” said Leong Ick Hou.
This period without new cases of Covid-19 “is due to the persistence of the population” in maintaining prevention measures and “also to the wearing of masks,” he added.
“The masks program has also reduced the risk of contagion from other communicable diseases, such as influenza,” the doctor said, adding that the government continues to “acquire masks around the world” to ensure the protection of residents.
The Higher Education Bureau has also launched a programme to purchase masks for students from Macau who are studying outside the territory, with over 1,200 students registered so far.
“Student representatives buy the masks and can send them immediately to the place where the student is”, said Chan Iok Wai, recalling that the registration runs until Thursday this week.
Macau currently has 257 people in quarantine at the Pousada Marina Infante and 60 at the Cynic Health Center in Coloane, officials said.
Thirty-four days with no new cases of Covid-19, Macau registered ten people infected with the new coronavirus, all of whom were discharged from hospital, although three are still in convalescent isolation in Coloane.
