Thirty-nine graduates – 23 from Macau and 16 from Mozambique, Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe – have completed the first cohort of the Diploma in Sustainable Tourism Practices, a programme run by the International Tourism Professionals Development Association Macao (TODA Macau) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).
The diploma programme, delivered both on‑site in Macau and online covered six modules: sustainable tourism practices, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, tourism law, marketing strategies, air transport, culinary tourism and heritage management.
The ceremony, held on Friday, honoured the graduates in the presence of diplomats, industry leaders and educators. The event also received congratulatory messages from institutions including the University of Eduardo Mondlane and tourism departments across Mozambique, as well as the Hotel and Tourism School of Cabo Verde.
TODA Macau president Florence Ian stressed that the project reflects the association’s commitment to “international tourism talent development, promoting knowledge exchange and sustainable development across regions.”
Professor Jenny Phillips of USJ highlighted “the need to bridge academic insight with practical training in sustainable tourism,” whilst TODA Macau chairman José Luís de Sales Marques emphasised the programme’s role in sharing Macau’s experience in linking sustainable development with tourism.
A second edition of the diploma will launch early next year. TODA Macau is also preparing a short video competition titled “Exploring Macao’s Sustainable Cultural Tourism — Through the Eyes of University Student Buddies,” aimed at encouraging creative storytelling about the city’s multicultural tourism offerings.
