Macau’s Consumer Council (CC) is to help to submit to China’s national autorities complaints made by consumer protection organisations in East Timor and Mozambique, under agreements between the organisations, it said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
In the statement, the CC said that it had signed mutual complaint referral guarantees with East Timor’s Association for Consumer Protection and Mozambique’s Association for the Study and Protection of Consumers.
These provide for the CC to provide information or mediation to consumers within 15 days of receiving cases referred from East Timor or Mozambique, and vice versa.
According to the CC, this “could ensure greater protection and confidence for residents in consumption” between the three countries.
The agreements, which were signed at the end of 2021, also provide for the three institutions to collaborate on staff training, the exchange of information and the joint organisation of seminars and workshops.
The Macau council had already signed similar cooperation protocols with the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO) and the Brazilian Association for Consumer Protection (Proteste) in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Macau, which was under Portuguese rule until 1999, is now a Special Administrative Region of China.
