Casino operator Wynn Resorts announced on Wednesday the creation of 30 annual scholarships for master’s students at the University of Science and Technology of Macau, including students from Portuguese-language countries.
The dean of the University of Science and Technology of Macau said that the scholarships “will significantly contribute to attracting students from Portuguese-speaking countries (…) to continue their studies” in the region.
According to a statement released by the company, Joseph Lee Hun-wei said that the scholarships are also open to applications from students from countries that are part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
This global infrastructure development strategy was launched in 2013, and more than 140 countries have joined it, including Angola, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste.
“After completing their studies, they will return to their homeland with the experiences they have gained in Macau, becoming cultural ambassadors who can tell the stories of China and Macau,” said Joseph Lee.
The dean quoted a statement made on 12 May by Xia Baolong, the Chinese Communist Party’s top official for the two semi-autonomous regions, during a six-day visit.
The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, under the State Council, defended the need to “invite foreign partners to visit and witness the vitality and attractiveness” of the two territories.
The agreement to create the scholarships was signed on Tuesday by Joseph Lee and Wynn Resorts President Linda Chen, in the presence of the Director of Education and Youth Development, Kong Chi Meng.
Quoted in the statement, Linda Chen recalled that in December, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that Macau should “strengthen ties with higher education institutions in Portuguese-language countries.”
At the inauguration of the new local government, Xi stressed that Macau is “the only place in the world where Portuguese and Chinese are official languages” and that the city must take advantage of “its uniqueness” to play “the role of a platform between China” and Portuguese-language countries.
The creation of the scholarship programme aims to promote the “cultivation of international talent in innovation and intelligence” in Macau, a place “where diverse cultures thrive in harmony,” said Linda Chen.
In December 2022, Macau’s six gaming operators signed 10-year concession agreements, committing to invest 108.7 billion patacas (€12 billion) in tourism and economic diversification.
The world’s gambling capital, with revenues twice those of Las Vegas, Macau is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.
