One person died and two were left with amputated limbs after a lynch mob descended on an alleged criminal gang in Manica province.
The incident, reported by the Lusa news agency, took place in Manica province and involved members of the public taking the law into their own hands.
Manica Police spokesman Elcídia Filipe outlined events in Machaze on Friday.
“The public resorted to mob justice, and three members of the gang fell into their hands. One died, another had a foot cut off and a third lost an arm.”
The PRM spokesperson said that a fourth member of the, believed to be its leader, sought sanctuary in the Machaze police command and escaped imminent death.
Norberto Mandava, a resident of the area, said the three victims were part of an alleged criminal group which, armed with knives and firearms, took advantage of the current climate of military conflict in the region to terrorise Machaze, stealing and raping women.
